thirty-two porcelain wall tile cards from the exhibition hwa

size range ~ 8” x 6”
these ceramic tile cards are recreations of hwatu cards with personal narratives. one set consisting of four tile cards determines a fortune— their meaning derived from the combination and arrangement of the tile cards.

the viewer determines their own intuitive interpretation behind this fortune, akin to a tarot reading.
burning from both ends - overworking, not enough time dokkaebi (goblin) - in korean legend the dokkeabi will either help or hinder you voyeur - peering through the foreground shadow, an abundant tree is seen submission - a dog showing its most vulnerable parts confusion - a spiral of doubt yellowbell - mother's favorite flower, a sign of happiness tokki tokki tokki (rabbits, rabbits, rabbits) - rabbits celebrate a new harvest moon finger sausage - beware of illusions and games decay - within a dying tree, seed pods provide rebirth pride - double headed rooster means twice the pride dominance - leash indicates servitude turbulence - like waves, emotions can be turbulent dolmen, tension - the point of almost touching

mother rat - mother is a resourceful, tired rat
flaccid - limp swords, soft power mirror - self reflection and vanity apology / apple - homonyms in korean, a slice of an apology reliance - broken claw means tenderness and care is needed learned bitterness - how does one be authentic? stubbornness - stubborn like a bull, all of my loved ones are oxes
aggression - showing teeth can be a sign of defense or readiness to fight dolmen, table - histories and secrets are hidden beneath rest - contemplation, moment of peace persimmons - offerings, consumption silhouette - casting a singular and noticeable shadow leg, bridge - homonym in korean, crossing a bridge using one leg bamboo - prosperity, wisdom, tradition parasite - long, unending infection pillea - fortune, abundance ripe persimmon - soft when ripe, but don't poke too hard seaweed/ricecake soup - good health and luck field of fire - a burst or overflow
